Handwritten cards dropping into heart covered bags. Candy covered in cheesy Hallmark statements. Secret admirers shyly hiding from their valentines. All are classic examples of Valentine’s day experiences. Some of these experiences resulted in capturing love, but others did not.

Senior Christian Funston remembers putting valentine cards into other girls’ valentine boxes. “I still have one of my [Valentine’s day] boxes that others put cards in,” said Funston.

“I remember when Luc [Pham] hazed Ellie [Spillane] with flowers and balloons [in middle school],” senior Sofia Sanchez said. Young admirers either had an exciting time presenting their love to their long time valentines or were shy, yet hopeful that their love would discover them.

Sanchez said, “I remember having Valentine’s day parties at school and picking out a special, festive outfit the day before, in hopes of my crush realizing I was candy-heart necklace-free.”

A lot has changed since those days of exchanging valentines with secret admirers. Nowadays, teens are maturing in how they show admirers their feelings.

Since they started dating two years ago, Senior Sofia Sanchez has not been able to spend Valentine’s day with her boyfriend, Adam Swisher. “Last year, [Adam] got me a beautiful bouquet in a heart shaped vase on February 15,” Sanchez said.

The theme of boyfriends doing something special for their girlfriends continues. Senior Funston surprised his girlfriend on Valentine’s day last year. “I bought Jennifer a big teddy bear and took her to Olive Garden,” Funston said.
