Many people in the area are aware of the freakish athleticism of identical twins, Kristen and Natalie Calvert, but not many know what being a twin athlete entails.
“Being a twin really helps in sports, because if I’m thinking of doing something, Natalie understands what I’m thinking without me having to say it aloud,” said Kristen.
They have been playing sports together for the last fifteen years, and it shows with their dominance on the volleyball court.
“I love playing with Nat,” said Kristen. “We help a sista out and get those stuffs.”
Getting to the point they are at today has not been easy. In the winter of 2013, Kristen tore her ACL in a skiing accident. Right around two years later in November of 2015, Natalie tore hers in the opposite leg while going for an offensive rebound in a preseason basketball game. Eight short months later, the same ligament in Natalie’s leg tore again.
“It scares me to know that I have a higher chance of reinjury than others,” Kristen said. “It affects how risky you are when you’re on the court.”
Neither sister lets that hold them back. Before Natalie’s second tear, both girls joined crossfit over the summer to condition their bodies for the upcoming sports seasons.
“Natalie’s worked hard to get where she was at, so it pains me to have seen her put in all that work for another setback,” said Kristen.
This is the last year the Calvert twins will be playing the game competitively together and both hope to make it the greatest one yet.
