The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence

When you hear someone like a friend ask the question “What is your favorite hair color?” or “What is your favorite eye color?” or maybe “What is your favorite hair type?” What is the first thing you think of?

In a student survey at G.H.S.  students were asked what was their favorite hair color, hair type and eye color while asking them what their natural hair color, hair type and eye color were. In the survey the most common natural hair color was brown hair. The most common hair type was straight hair and the most common eye color was brown eyes.

The reason brown hair and brown eyes are the most common traits in students is because they both are dominant traits. Dominant traits tend to mask recessive traits. Think of it this way, darker colors cover up light colors easily, but with light colors it’s a lot harder to cover dark colors with light colors.

With hair types, straight hair on the other hand is a recessive trait because it is the only hair type without a bend in it. So how could so many students at G.H.S. have straight hair you might wonder. Well, this is because when America was first discovered most of the immigrants that came to America had straight hair, which meant that there was little diversity in hair types which gave the perfect circumstance for straight hair to thrive and be passed down to generation after generation with such success.

In the survey of the favorite traits of the students were brown hair as the best hair color with straight hair as the most favored hair type. However with eye color blue eyes were considered the most favorable even though most of the students who were surveyed had brown eyes.

No matter what your hair color, hair type, or eye color  students are reminded that they are unique, that these traits are what make them special. Many people find that they wish they could have a different eye color, hair type or hair color, but it’s like they say “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.”
