Pirates kick off the Holiday Tournament with wins

The Lady Pirates played in the Holiday Tournament in Pearl City for the first time this year. Their first game took place on Saturday, December 8 against the Le-Win Panthers. At half time, the pirates were losing 15-22. When they came back out they were playing much faster, and corrected some of the things they did wrong in the first half. They ended up winning the game 37-34.

“We knew that we had to play better in the second half if we wanted to win the game,” said Corrina Noble ‘21. “We listened to what the coaches told us and corrected everything we could to play better.”

The Pirates played their second game of the tournament on Tuesday, December 11 against the Durand Bulldogs. Sami Wasmund ‘20 led the Pirates with 16 points in the first half. At halftime, the Pirates were leading the Bulldogs with a score of 30-21. “We knew we had to create our own energy because the gym was so quiet,” said Wasmund, “so that’s what we did!”

When they came back out in the third quarter, Galena pulled further away and won the game 54-40. The highest scorer was Wasmund with 24 points, and close behind was Mackenzie Muehleip ‘20 with 21 points for the Pirates. This made them undefeated in the tournament. They also won their pool, but unfortunately didn’t get put into the championship game because of the tiebreaker of points scored.

“I am very happy with how we’ve done so far this season and can’t wait to see how the rest of the season goes,” said Wasmund. “We are a young team but still play very well against the other schools!”

The Galena Pirates play their final game of the tournament on Thursday, December 13 against the Dakota Indians in Pearl City. The Pirate’s overall record this season is 8-3, and they play on Saturday, December 15 at Pecatonica.
