Disheartening Defeat in Elizabeth

As the final seconds of the GHS boys varsity game versus River Ridge wound down, it was obvious that there was an underlying theme to this particular game. While the scoreboard may have told one story, there was one on the court that had to be seen to believe.

The final score of the game was River Ridge 62, Galena 56. Conner Einsweiler ’19 lead the team in scoring with 23 points. “It was a long game and there were certain calls we didn’t agree with, but it happens,” said Einsweiler, “I told my teammates we just have to play through it.”

In the second half, it seemed as though all hell had broken loose. In the third quarter, Sam Hesselbacher ’21 received a technical foul for not immediately entering the court upon in-bounding the ball.  However, while a stern warning is normally given, there was none and a technical was issued. “I was angry,” said Jack Einsweiler ’19, “They should have given him a warning, it’s a stupid call.”

Similarly, in the fourth quarter Evan Kruse ’19 received a technical in addition to Hesselbacher. The technical was given to Kruse for slapping the floor out of anger on a foul called on himself. Despite the call, Kruse finished third in scoring with nine points.

The Galena Pirates are prepared to come back with a vengeance the following day with a home game versus Scales Mound. Their record going into their last home game with a record of 11-13.
