Reeling in Victories

The GHS Bass Fishing team is excited to start their 2019 season. The team lost two talented seniors from last season, Hunter Wasmund, and Sam Hodgson but, this year’s three seniors, Tyler Moran and Joseph Leitzinger, and Travis Heuer will fill their shoes. “I’m excited about this upcoming season,” said Tyler Moran. “We have a lot of great fisherman that want to do well in the tournament.”

There were many freshman that joined the bass fishing team this year and have already been showing their skills. “I love fishing, so now that I get to compete for school, I’m super excited,” said Jarrett Basten ‘22. “The tournament we went to at Batavia High School was really fun.” The tournament was held on February 9th in Batavia, Illinois.

Last season the team was successful, with their five biggest fish weighing in at 15 pounds, 4 ounces. That was unfortunately not enough to make it to state, but was the weight that won sectionals two years ago. “We are hoping to do just as well, if not better this season,” said Sophie Northrup ‘21. “I’m very excited to start our tournaments!”

Bass Fishing tournaments start in April and continue through the beginning of May.

The bass fishing team has already had multiple practices throughout the winter and they attended a pitching, flipping, and casting tournament at Batavia High School on February 9th. There were around 100 people at the tournament and Hunter Basten ‘20, took third place overall. “It was really exciting to take third place,” said H. Basten. “Our season is looking really good!”

The Bass Fishing team doesn’t have any set tournament dates, but the IHSA Sectional competition is scheduled for Thursday May 2nd on the Mississippi River.
