Soccer scores first conference win

The Lady Pirates played the River Valley Blackhawks on Friday, Apr. 12 in Galena. The Pirates had their first conference win of the season and defeated River Valley by a score of 2-1.

In the first half, Galena had many opportunities to score, including a penalty kick, but did not score. They let the Blackhawks score one goal in the first half but held them to that the rest of the game. “It was really frustrating when we weren’t doing well in the first half,” said Olivia Schafer ‘21. “But we really pulled it together for the second half.”

After halftime, the Pirates came out hot. McKenna Curran ‘20 took advantage of a mistake by a defender, and scored one on one with the goalkeeper. “I was really motivated to win, so I worked really hard to get an open shot,” said Curran. “Then, the opportunity to score came, so I took it!”

Hanna Skiston ‘19 scored their second and final goal of the game. She had a beautiful kick from 25 yards away, and it went in. “I was happy that I scored the goal to put us in the lead,” said Skiston.”I was just hoping that we could keep it for the rest of the game.”

Kristin Hall ‘21, Maggie Handfelt ‘21, Jenny Hernandez ‘20, and Schafer, had a great game as well. They all created several opportunities for themselves and their teammates to score throughout the game.

The Pirates have three wins, three losses, and one tie so far this season. They play their next game on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at River Valley. They hope to get another win.
