March 15 – Also nominated for Pirate Competitor of the Week

Senior basketball players Conor Behr, Ryan Holland, Sam Hesselbacher, Jon Martensen, Khalid Newton and Jacob Townsend finished up their careers last week with wins over River Ridge and West Carroll.  Coach Wienen nominated all six, saying “last week was a powerful one as someone who has coached this group since 4th grade.  It was bittersweet to watch their final moments play out on the court this week. They have had some great moments here in their Galena basketball career. I’m so happy of their accomplishments and looking forward to seeing their growth as young men. We didn’t get to finish their careers with the goal we set (winning a regional), but this group’s positive impact on our school, community, and each other is better than any trophy we would ever bring back. It’s been an honor to be your coach, the lessons that we have both taught each other I’m forever grateful for.  Thank you Conor, Ryan, Sam, Jon, Khalid and Jacob for a wonderful season, career, and everything you’ve given to our basketball program these last 4 years. We appreciate the grit and talent you all have brought to our basketball program. Thank you for your hard work, effort and commitment you’ve given! ☠️”
8th grade quiz bowl competitor Quin Wells snagged 9 toss-ups in Monday’s final matches of the season and he has been a dominant force during practices as well. According to coach Ashley Hoppenjan, “Quin has a competitive nature and a zest for scholastic bowl that I hope he carries with him as he moves on to GHS next year.”
