Maggie Furlong ’22

Senior volleyball player Maggie Furlong is this week’s Pirate Competitor of the Week sponsored by Galena Culver’s and the Galena Gazette.  Furlong helped guide the Pirates to a 7-0 record over the first week of the season, including a championship at the Galena Varsity Invitational.  For the week, Maggie had 42 kills, 48 digs, 5 blocks, and went 25/31 on serves with 2 aces.  Coach Dennis Wills praised her efforts, “Coming off a major injury, Maggie has resumed her role on the volleyball team and immediately has had a huge impact. Her drive and desire to get back on the court has been very impressive!  Maggs played a huge role this past week in leading us to a 7-0 start!”  Maggie was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Also Nominated:
7th grade volleyball setter Zoe Blaum had 7 aces, 1 kill, and 3 assists during last week’s 3-0 win over Warren (21-9, 21-7, 21-14).
8th grader Mya McCoy helped lead the Pirates to a 3-0 (21-9, 21-12, 21-14) victory last Thursday week against Warren with 9 aces and multiple kills. According to coach Kailyn Stumpf, “Mya has worked hard since day one and is a great leader to her teammates.”
Sophomore golfer and football player Jack Ries was nominated for his efforts by coach Greg Fleege who commented, “Any athlete that would get up early at 5:00am and go to school and lift weights and then come to golf practice at 6:30am the same day deserves recognition.  Jack is one of my top 6 varsity players with a golf average of 40.  Anyone that can play two sports and give both 100% deserves athlete of the week.”
