Pirate Competitor of the Week
Junior golfer Ryan Stoffregen is this week’s Pirate Competitor of the Week sponsored by Galena Culver’s and the Galena Gazette. Ryan shot a 77 to win the IHSA 1A Regional in Freeport on Wednesday.  His effort led the Pirates to their third regional title in team history.  Ryan, along with the team, advanced to the Byron Sectional on Monday, October 4.  Ryan was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Also Nominated:
Junior volleyball player Julia Townsend had a stellar week for the Pirates with 149 assists, 26 digs, 4 blocks, and 4 kills.  She also went 29 of 32 on serves with 4 aces.  Coach Dennis Wills commented, “Julia has worked very hard this past year to improve her skills as a setter and it shows every time she takes the court. This past week it was certainly on display as she consistently put the ball where our hitters needed it to be and that was a huge factor in the team going 7-0. Along with that this past week at the Orion tournament she made some absolutely stunning plays that had me saying ‘wow, that was amazing!’ Great job Jules!”

8th grade volleyball player Kennedy Roddick helped lead the team to victories last week against Potosi and Stockton.   Kennedy had several assists and a total of 10 aces between both matches. According to coach Kailyn Stumpf, “I can always count on Kennedy to keep the team morale up and give it her all on the court. I’m proud of her and her accomplishments this season so far.”

7th grade football player Keinan Lyden had an outstanding game in a 30-12 victory over Eastland-Pearl City this week.  He had 194 yards rushing and 3 TD’s.  Keinan also was a leader on the defensive side of the ball with 6 tackles and an interception.  According to coach Tyler Sincock, “Keinan has continued to improve this year on both sides of the ball and has made great strides since our first game.  He is playing faster and more physical, and his vision as a running back has improved greatly.”

Senior Ethan Hefel had another superior performance in leading the Pirates to a thrilling 41-40 victory over EPC. Ethan was 14-28 for 220 yards and 3 touchdowns. Coach Ed Freed commented, “Ethan made some clutch plays and did a great job leading the offense down to tie the score at the end of regulation to get it in overtime. His decision making and accuracy continues to be at a high level.  He also contributed seven tackles on defense and a big pass break up in overtime.”

Senior Brady Schemehorn had a big night offensively against EPC catching the ball as he had six catches for 117 yards and 3 touchdowns. According to Ed Freed, “Brady continues to make big plays on offense and did a great job running after the catch to get valuable yards. He also executed a huge play on our 2 point conversion to get it in overtime.  Brady has been a big offensive weapon for us this year and has made some great catches.”
