On Thursday, August 29 the Galena Pirates Volleyball team hosted the Fulton Steamers for the first game of the season. The games were played in the GEMS gyms.
The freshman took the court first. In their first game, the girls dominated, 25-18. During the second game the time was running out, and the game ended before the Pirates could take the W. “We played a lot better than we thought we did,” said Cora McCoy ‘28. “We were really disappointed that we didn’t get to finish the second game.” At the end of playable time, the score of the game was 14-18.
The JV team played well, nailing down their first wins of the season as well. Olivia Hillard ‘27 led the team with 13 assists, and freshman Layla Cagney added 7 kills to the mix. The Pirates won the first game 25-21. “I think the games went really well,” said Ell Law ‘27. “We started out rough because it’s the first game of the season. Eventually, we started playing as a team and started to communicate which overall helped us win.” The score in the second game was 25-22.
The varsity Pirates started their season strong with game scores of 25-23, 27-29 and 25-15. Senior Abigale Merritt had 13/13 serves, 2 blocks, and 30 assists. Gracie Furlong ‘25 added 20 kills and 15 digs for the Pirates. Mya McCoy ‘26 said, “I thought the game was fun and the crowd was very loud and supportive.” With long plays and tricky tips, the Steamers couldn’t match the precision and the intensity the Pirates were hitting at them.
The Pirates will host the Galena Tournament this weekend and will play at home on Tuesday, Sept. 3 vs the Rockford Christian Lady Eagles.
