Every year, Galena High School hosts ImpactLife, a life-saving event on campus. Blood donation plays a crucial role in saving lives and reflects the kindness in people’s hearts. This event has become a key part of GHS’s history, and people will continue to come together for this important cause.
This year, the event took place on Wednesday, March 5th, in the GHS parking lot. NHS hosted this opportunity to give back to others. Certain requirements included weighing at least 110 lbs, being 16 years old or older, having a photo ID, and obtaining parental consent. A total of 31 students participated in the drive, enough for a total of 29 units of blood!
Hospitals and clinics rely on blood banks to ensure they have enough blood to assist their patients. Patients need blood during emergencies, like accidents, but those with chronic illnesses require these blood donations more regularly.
Preparation is just as important as the act of donating. Staying well-hydrated, having a nutritious meal or eating snacks throughout the day, getting a good night’s sleep, and avoiding fatty foods are all recommended by the American Red Cross Blood Association.
Many students experienced side effects after donating. For example, GHS student Daniella Bello ‘26 fainted multiple times. “I feel like they should have given more information on the side effects and how to better prepare,” said Bello. She spent two days recovering from her symptoms but is willing to donate again. “I felt like a hero or a savior for someone because my blood could save a life. It was so worth the pain,” she added.
NHS advisor Mrs. Friederick has personal experience with the importance of blood donation. Mrs. Friederick’s sister-in-law was pregnant and went into early labor. She called an ambulance and was taken to a small hospital in Darlington, WI, as she was losing blood rapidly. By the time she arrived, she had lost so much blood that she needed the entire blood supply the hospital had on hand—and still required more. The nearest blood supply was in Monroe, WI, and it would take time to get the blood to Darlington. Her sister-in-law and her baby were both in critical condition. The doctors, nurses, EMTs, and even the hospital office staff immediately started donating blood to save their lives. Thanks to everyone’s donations, both mother and baby survived!
Although the side effects were not as expected, it was worth it in the end. Mrs. Friederick said, “I love seeing new faces join our mission, and hopefully, we can make lifelong donors out of those students.” Donating blood is a selfless act that helps others in need. You could save someone’s life! ImpactLife is located in Dubuque, IA, and is open for appointments. As we continue to support this vital cause, we encourage everyone to get involved—because you never know whose life your donation might save.
