Lady Pirates kick off season with a win
The Lady Pirates basketball team opened their season on Thursday, November 15th, playing the Warren Warriors, in the Warren Turkey Tournament. The Pirates came out strong despite only having had three practices to prepare for this game. The Pirates beat the Warriors 67-36.
The team lost three starters from last year, and has only one senior this year. This team is very young. Many of the players have never even played in a varsity game until Thursday night. This didn’t hold them back though, they won the first half 36-21 and came out hot in the second half. After halftime, the Pirates scored 31 more points, and held the warriors to 15 points in the second half.
Sami Wasmund ‘20 led the team in points with a personal game high of 31. Gracie Wubben ‘20 followed with 14 points for the game. “I think we started off pretty good for only having three practices,” said Wasmund. “We still have a lot of work to do but our season is looking great!”
The Pirates head back to the tournament on Friday, playing East Dubuque, and Orangeville and Durand on Monday and Tuesday. Their regular season starts on November 28th at home against last year’s state runner-up, the Stockton Blackhawks.
