Pirates win season opener at Byron
Pass! Set! Kill! The Galena Lady Pirates volleyball team killed the competition Thursday night in Byron. With a score of 25-15 for the first game and 25-19 for the second game, Abby Soppe ‘21 served ten straight balls while Sami Wasmund ‘20 served eight balls with two aces.
Other lead scorers were Maggie Furlong ‘22 with ten kills, McKenna Curran ‘20 and Kate Moran ‘21 with two blocks each. Soppe had fifteen assists and Wasmund had fourteen digs.
Byron, a non-conference team, had no idea what hit them., “It feels good to beat a bigger school, because it is a good preparation for our postseason,” said Mackenzie Muehleip ‘20, a middle blocker. “I think that we could have played a little better than we did during this game but a win is a win!”
The season just started, but that means nothing to the Galena Volleyball team. They know with hard work they can achieve their goals. This year, the team has their sights set on heading back to the Red Bird Arena for another shot at the state championship. Even though the regular season just started, it doesn’t stop the Lady Pirates from leaving their heart on the court and giving their all into each and every game. Next, Galena will play West Carroll away on September 10, good luck Pirates!
