Galena Pirates Secure the Trophy
Galena Varsity Boys Basketball team won the Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament in Pecatonica on January 16, 2023. The boys team played the Eastland Cougars, the Pecatonica Indians, and the Johnsburg Skyhawks.
The first game the team played was the Eastland Cougars on January 14, 2023. The leading scorer of the game was Junior Connor Glasgow. He scored 17 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 1 steal. To add to the team was Sophomore Parker Studtmann with 13 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Also, Senior Kolby Knautz had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal.
“I was not feeling great because the game was close,” said Glasgow. “The game was very sloppy, but we won.” The team had a rough game, but got ready to play Pecatonica. The final score of the game was 59-50.
The basketball team played against the Pecatonica Indians to make it to the Championship on January 14, 2023. Studtmann was the leading scorer for this game with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Next to Studtmann was Glasgow with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, 1 steal. Adding to the team as well is Knautz with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
“Going into the game it was pretty nerve racking because everyone knew that Pecatonica was one of the best teams in the area,” said Knautz. “When we beat them it was one of the best feelings ever.” This game was a very big win for the boys because Pecatonica is in a 2A class for basketball. The final score was 74-60.
In the Championship game the Galena Pirates played against the Johnsburg Skyhawks. The highest scorer of the game was Studtmann with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Assisting the win for the team was Glasgow with 11 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block. Also, Kaden Hauber ‘25 helped the team with 10 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists.
“We were all very excited, but not satisfied. It was a huge accomplishment, but the goal in mind is still to win conference and regionals,” said Studtmann. “It was really just a proving point to our team that we can play with anyone in the area.” The boys had a huge win and are ready for any challenge that comes their way. The final score of the game was 58-45. They were rewarded with a trophy.
The boys overall record is 15-7. Their conference record is 3-2, which makes them third in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference.
