As the school year starts, so does the GSA. The GSA is a club for LGBTQ+ students and their allies to get together to provide inclusion and promote acceptance and understanding throughout the school. The club meets once a month during homeroom where students can come and join. A big part of the club is proving a safe place for students to be themselves and making the school more inclusive. Mrs. T said,” I’m excited to meet our new members and see our previous members again.”
The club also has many fun events throughout the year; Mrs. T said, “I Always look forward to National Coming Out Day in October because the whole student body is very supportive of that event.” The GSA also provides social nights where students can get together and do different activities, like watching fun movies and doing crafts, Mrs. T said. “I think our Halloween social event is gonna be super cool, but I can’t reveal all the details just yet.”
Another exciting event the GSA participates in is the Galena Pride Picnic, which is held at Grant Park. It provides a day for LGBTQ+ people and allies to celebrate and promote inclusivity. Gracie Duhack 25’ said, “Pride Picnic will always have a special spot in my heart…my favorite part is always the drag show…The atmosphere is so positive and happy; people sing and dance and laugh, and the performances are always amazing. It makes me feel so full.”
Some new things are also happening in GSA this year, such as forming a new leadership council of students, which will allow the students more control regarding decision-making in the club. Mrs T said, ”I’m thrilled to see what they decide to do!”
If you’re still wondering if GSA is right for you or if you should join, come to the GSA meeting on September 12th to see what it’s all about. Mrs. T said, ”Students should join for the awesome energy. Being a part of GSA feels good. We have so many students that attend as allies because it is essential to them that GHS feel safe and inclusive for all. I love that. This club is all about having fun and supporting each other, so it’s pretty much the best!
