Pirate Competitor of the Week – Abby Merritt Varsity Volleyball
Coach Dennis Wills said, “Abby had a great week for us and was very instrumental in us going 7-0 which included going 5-0 at the Dubuque Invitational Tournament. On Saturday she even battled through an injury when she and another player collided during a match and continued to play at a high level. She put up some fantastic #’s in the 7 matches:143 assist, 33 digs, 24/27 in serves with 4 aces. Great job Abby!”
Abby was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Olivia Lincoln 7th Grade Volleyball – Coach Amy McCoy said, “Olivia Lincoln is one of our setters and during our tournament she really showed her determination for the game. She had 7 ace serves in 1 match and many assists. She has really come out of her shell and shown great leadership and commitment. Great job Liv.”
Chesnie Rosenthal – 8th Grade Volleyball – Coach Kailyn Stumpf commented, “Chesnie is a force in the back row, digging up whatever the opponent hits at her. She plays a smart game and wears the libero jersey with pride. Chesnie had a great week of volleyball and an awesome tournament on Saturday. Way to go, Chesnie!”
Connor Higgins 8th Grade Football – 8th grade football player Connor Higgins had a big game this week in a 32-0 victory over Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg. Coach Tyler Sincock said, “He had three touchdown receptions including two over 50 yards. Connor has everything you need to be a complete wide receiver including good hands, quickness, great route running, and excellent blocking down field. He does an excellent job of going up and high pointing the football.”
Kendall Ziegler – GEMS Cross Country – Coach Brooke Huttenlocher said, “Kendall has had an amazing few weeks, improving her race times every week, earning big points for her team, and preserving through some challenging races. She won 1st place at both our home dual and triangular meets against Pecatonica, East Dubuque and Stockton/Le-Win.”
