The first Galena Rotary Student of the Quarter selected for the ‘24 – ‘25 school year is Justo Aguirre Marin ‘27. This award recognizes sophomores who have excelled in their efforts to improve academically and are not always recognized for these efforts. One can be chosen for this award from teacher nominations that express why a student should be nominated.
Many GHS teachers had positive and delightful things to say about Aguirre Marin and his demeanor in the classroom. Aguirre Marin has also worked hard to understand English more fluently and now only has one class in the ESL room, while the rest of his classes are solely taught in English. Mrs. McIntyre, his Driver Education teacher, said, “Justo is incredibly sweet, and is such a hard worker. He works so hard in class, and always tries his best. He is truly a joy to be around, and have in the classroom.”
Aguirre Marin is always a helping hand in the classroom, which hasn’t gone unnoticed. “I wish I had a whole classroom of Justos!” said Mrs. Thraen Borowski, GHS art teacher. “He works hard, but more than that he is genuinely kind and aware of those around him. He always has a positive attitude and is quick to assist his peers in class.” His good character is not only present in his interactions but also in his work ethic. “Justo also takes the time to ask me about my day and check in in case I need anything,” said Threan Borowski. “He brightens every classroom he is in. Specifically in art class, Justo is always pushing himself to develop more skills and put in the extra effort on his projects. He is a great example of a well-rounded, excellent student.”
Mr. Knight, Justo’s history teacher, said, “Justo always has a smile on his face and brings positive energy to the classroom.” This demonstrates Aguirre Marin’s ability to transfer his positive qualities to each and every classroom he’s in.
Outside of the classroom, Aguirre Marin likes to play soccer and video games. After high school, he would like to pursue a career in auto mechanics.
