Some people feel like girl math is the secret formula to endless shopping sprees. Girl math is used to help people justify their shopping addictions. “I think everyone should learn about girl math because then they can realize that everything is free!” said Cameron Einsweiler ‘26. Before diving into girl math there are many basic rules that you must learn to understand the full concept.
The main rule of girl math is cash is always free. Or if you can buy something but can make up the money it is free. “When I went to see Taylor Swift I bought a shirt that was $45 but I worked the next day and made all the money back in tips so I didn’t spend anything,” said Daniela Bello-Yanes ’26. Using a gift card or credit card is also free. “I like to use my credit card when I buy things because then I don’t see the charge on it so I never feel guilty about spending money,” said Mrs. Burken
Another key tenet of girl math is the art of rounding down. When making a purchase, girl mathematicians round down, ignoring any extra costs. For example, a $140 item might be mentally categorized as a $100 purchase. Additionally, sales are seen as opportunities to make money, rather than simply save money. If you don’t purchase a discounted item, you’re losing money.
Girl Math can also be when your friend buys you something instead of paying them back you just buy them something next time. Also, girl math is writing your newspaper articles together so you don’t have to write them individually. Sometimes it is not all about friends it can also be about, not crying when you break up with your boyfriend of 2 or more years but sobbing when the boy you’ve had 3 dates with doesn’t text back.
Girl math isn’t only used to justify your irresponsible spending habits. It can be applied to everyday life, using your arms to measure things is also girl math. If you wanted to move a bookshelf instead of getting a tape measure you would use your arms to see if it would fit. Another example is using a butter knife because you can’t find a screwdriver.
Girl math is an important way of spending money. “It makes me feel better because when I went to the national convention I used my cash so I didn’t spend money,” said Caitlyn Soat ‘27. People should start to incorporate girl math into their everyday lives to help them not feel as guilty about their spending. By understanding the principles of girl math, we can appreciate the humor behind it while making informed financial decisions.
