As children, we often dream of becoming astronauts, scientists, or presidents. However, life’s paths can take unexpected turns. When we asked the staff at Galena High School about their childhood aspirations, we discovered fascinating stories of how their dreams evolved into their current careers.
A Passion for Numbers
Mrs. Burken, a math teacher, initially envisioned a career in accounting. After taking a business class, she realized her true passion lay in mathematics. She switched her major to secondary education and has been inspiring young minds ever since.
Mrs. Calfee, another math teacher, always knew she wanted to pursue a career in education. She majored in mathematics and secondary education, and eventually found her way to Galena High School.
A Creative Spirit
Mrs. Thraen-Borowski, the school’s art teacher, took a more circuitous route. After studying art, she worked as a social worker for seven years. However, her love for art persisted, leading her back to school to become an art teacher. She combines her passion for art with her social work experience, providing students with a unique and enriching learning environment.
Leadership and Guidance
Mrs. Hawkins, the high school principal, once aspired to a career in law or politics. But after joining Teach for America, she discovered her love for education. She now enjoys watching students grow and achieve their goals.
Mrs. Deppe, the school counselor, always knew she wanted to help others. While she initially envisioned a career in clinical counseling, she found her calling in school counseling. She provides students with support and guidance, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence.
The Journey Matters
The stories of these educators remind us that life’s paths are often unpredictable. While childhood dreams may evolve, the underlying desire to make a positive impact on the world remains constant. By embracing opportunities and following their passions, these individuals have found fulfilling careers that allow them to inspire and support the next generation.
