The story starts on Christmas Eve when John McClane visits his wife at her office holiday party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. The party is interrupted by a group of terrorists who take the people hostage. McClane sneaks away unnoticed by the terrorist. He used his cop instincts to fight the terrorists and help save the hostages. There is much controversy about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
In some people’s perspectives, Die Hard is a Christmas classic that displays a father’s love for preserving through challenges to save his family and Christmas itself. On the other hand, people feel although Die Hard is a classic movie and everyone should watch it, it is not considered a Christmas classic.
Many people feel that saying Die Hard is a Christmas movie is 100% wrong. Cameron Einsweiler ‘26 said, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie; no one in their right mind feels warm and fuzzy in the holly jolly Christmas mood after watching it. It’s around Christmas but not a Christmas movie; if you think it is a Christmas movie, you’re wrong!”
When Mr. Knight was asked if he thought Die Hard was a Christmas movie he responded with “No!”
But some people are a little insane and consider Die Hard to be a Christmas movie. Avery Ziegler 25’ said, “Die Hard is a Christmas movie because it is.”
Ell Law 27’ had the same opinion too, “I think Die Hard is a Christmas movie because it is during the Christmas session and the whole movie takes place on Christmas Eve.”
The classic debate of whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie is a matter of personal perspective. While it features a Christmas setting, music, and themes, it also features an action-packed plot and intense scenes that set it apart from traditional holiday films. Whether you view DieHard as a Christmas movie ultimately depends on what elements you believe are essential for a movie to be considered part of the holiday genre.
