Outstanding Artist of December – Emily Carothers ’27 – Drawing and Painting
Ms. Thraen-Borowski – Emily is truly a creative spirit. She exudes unique ideas and originality is everything she does. Naturally, this carries over very successfully to art. Emily also works hard and puts in the time on her projects. She jumps into her artwork with lots of ideas and isn’t scared to challenge herself. It has been really cool to see her progression through her high school art classes. She has strong opinions and is dedicated to her artwork, making it easy to be impressed by Emily. I know she’ll be making art for the rest of her life, she’s just one of those people.
Emily’s thoughts on all things art:
Why do you think art is important?
I think art is important because it’s a way to express your emotions in a different way than just writing. It’s always been difficult to put words with my emotions but I can show how they feel.
What does art mean to you?
For me art is an escape from reality, you can create whatever your mind desires with no limitations.
Why do you make art?
I make art because I despise writing. Words jumble together in my brain when talking, reading, and listening, I never am able to truly able to get my point across. Art is a visual piece and can be understood no matter how or what you speak. Even if you have a different idea of artwork it is still meaningful in that way.
What type of art do you like to make?
I really enjoy photography and 3d art. I tend to make more drawings and paintings because the materials are easier to access.
How do you plan to incorporate art into your life after high school?
I hope to be a photographer or an interior designer. If not I would still make art on the side as a hobby because I enjoy finishing a tough piece of art.
What is something you wish the outside world knew about high school art classes?
Our high school art classes are really free reign, you have guidelines on your piece and create whatever you can. After experiencing high school art classes I realized how much I enjoy creating art.
Also Nominated – Jacinto Britos Marcos ’26 – Drawing & Painting
Ms. Thraen-Borowski – Jacinto lights up when he is working on artwork. He flies through projects and cranks out so much work. He is eager to learn new techniques and it is clear that making art is something he really enjoys. His work ethic and great attitude really set him apart from his peers. He’s the type of student teachers are excited to have in class because he will gobble up whatever is thrown his way. Jacinto is another person that will always make art, it is simply a part of him.
Also Nominated – Travis Temperly ’26 – Drawing and Painting
Ms. Thraen-Borowski – Travis is a very thoughtful artist. He cares about the quality of his work and clearly enjoys making art. Since he first took an art class I knew his projects would be unique, often humorous, and well done. His skills are advanced and I always look forward to seeing his work. Travis has a great easy going attitude and is always one of the first students to help out. He is an important presence in the art room that helps create a fun space. I am confident he will continue to make art long after high school.
Congratulations to all the artists!
