On December 10, the Galena Girls Basketball team hosted Riverdale High School.
Riverdale led 12 points ahead of Galena in the first quarter, 20-8. Leah Heller ‘27 started the girls off strong in the first quarter scoring a 3-pointer and making 2 out of 3 free throws. “I felt really good about the start of the game,” said Heller. “Riverdale is a good team, and when we started strong, I felt like we were going to win.”
But Heller wasn’t the only one who helped. Sophomore Ell Law scored two points as well. However, Riverdale struck back. Galena only scored 8 points in the first quarter and Riverdale scored 20.
In the second quarter, the girls started to step up. Gracie Furlong ‘25 and Dani Rae Hulschuer ‘26 scored 10 points to bring Galena back into the game. Once again, Riverdale attacked strong and hard, but our girls attacked harder–Galena scored 15 points in the second quarter and Riverdale only scored 8. “I think we did the best we could,” said Hulscher. Although we were down a lot in the first half, we stepped it up and returned in the second half.” As the Pirates headed to the locker room for halftime, the score was 23-31.
The third quarter saw sophomore Kendra Bauer score with a two-pointer, 1 free throw, and one 3-pointer. The game however took a twist. The teams moved into overtime. Riverdale scored 2 free throws, and one 3-pointer; causing the score to end in 46-52. “There isn’t much to talk about, we just wish it went better,” said Furlong.
The Pirates preserved through a long, hard game but sadly fell behind in overtime and lost to Riverdale by 3 points.
