On December 14, the boy’s basketball team went against Rockford Lutheran during the Eastland Holiday tournament. The final score in the end was 58-59. It was a nail-biting game from the start, as both teams were nearly at the same score for each quarter. After an incredibly intense quarter, the Pirates unfortunately were a point behind and went home with a loss, but not without giving it their all.
At the start of the game, the Pirates were already at an amazing start and showed great energy, ending the first quarter with 16-12. Peter Wagner ‘27 said, “It was great to see how energetic the varsity game was.” All the players seemed to have high spirits as they played with great defensive skills and strong offense plays.
Samuel Amaya ‘25 averaged 7 rebounds during the game, which helped Galena tremendously. This also allowed for strong defense plays from many of the players. Despite the solid lead at halftime, Rockford Lutheran wasn’t about to give up that easily.
GHS boys basketball coach, Matt Wienen said, “After halftime we had a good run to end the 3rd quarter. We got up 7 before the end of the 3rd quarter, but played good defense and had good possession on offense.”
Owen Hefel, Myles Schumacher and Drew Keonigs had really stepped up towards the end. Owen had managed to have 14 rebounds in total, while Schumacher and Keonigs scored very well. These players really helped the Pirates get to where they needed to be.
Wienen said, “I felt it was a good game, I just wish the ending was different.” Galena managed to keep up with Rockford Lutheran for a long time, but unfortunately had lost to one extra point from the other team. However, that didn’t stop their coach from being any less proud of them, “We gave ourselves every chance to win, just couldn’t get a stop on the last possession.” Although the Pirates took a loss, they played to their best ability and Galena can’t wait for what else they do this season!
