Bubbl’r is a new, trendy energy drink that has quickly risen to popularity among students and even teachers. The drink is specifically known for its refreshing flavor that gives it a unique experience. Bubbl’r offers 12 different flavors to choose from, appealing to everyone’s different tastes. Layla Schemehorn ‘27 said, “I don’t like a lot of drinks due to the flavors, but Bubbl’r doesn’t have that problem, it has more of a sweet taste than other drinks, which I like.”
The drink does contain certain added sugars and caffeine, which gives kids the “boost” that they need. Ava Engle ‘27 said, “I love Bubbl’r! It gives that small amount of caffeine that I really need during the day.”
However, many teachers and even parents have shown concern over this. GHS Teacher, Randi Burken said, “It definitely isn’t the healthiest, and I think a lot of the kids rely on the caffeine amount too much.” Bubbl’r has 69 mg of caffeine in each can, and students are sometimes drinking more than two a day, which is over 138 mg of caffeine. That would be 690 mg of caffeine per school week. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that, “Adolescents ages 12 to 18 limit their caffeine intake to 100 mg per day.” Caffeine can affect a student’s health. It can ruin their education, sleep, and mental and physical health.
Many of the teachers have voiced their concerns about this drink, and that it can potentially become a problem for the kids. GHS Teacher, Greg Tancell said, “Not only is the drink not the best, but once kids start bringing it in the class, then it becomes a problem.” Many of the GHS teachers don’t allow drinks in the classroom due to safety concerns (spillage, etc). GHS Teacher, Susan Friederick said, “I don’t allow drinks in my classroom for the reason that it might spill. However, the amount of kids that are constantly drinking it and are taking in that much caffeine is a big problem.”
Bubbl’r has sparked controversy among many people at GHS. Some like it and drink it multiple times throughout the day, while others wish that there were more healthier options for the vending machine. However, with the teachers taking it out of classrooms, it’s easier for kids to balance out how much they drink and instead have it in moderation. Even with that happening, It looks like Bubbl’r is here to stay for a while.
