The Galena Pirates boys basketball team secured a hard-fought victory over Stockton on the road, defeating their rivals 53-32.
Owen Hefel ’26 led the Pirates offensively, scoring 17 points. “I thought I did pretty well,” Hefel reflected. “The game was going really good in the beginning.” Coach Matt Wienen echoed Hefel’s sentiments, praising his performance, “I thought Owen Hefel shot the ball really well. He was a big part of our offense.”
Koenigs ’26 also contributed significantly, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He notably scored 12 points in the second half. “During the third quarter, they started crawling back,” Koenigs observed, “which we managed to eventually shut away.”
The first quarter saw a slower start for the Pirates, with the score at 4-8. However, they gradually gained momentum. The third quarter proved crucial, with the Pirates pulling ahead to 44-27, putting them in a strong position.
“Playing Stockton is always tough,” Coach Wienen acknowledged. “Stockton plays hard on both ends of the floor and runs a good defense.” Despite the challenges, the Pirates maintained their composure, executing strong defense and limiting turnovers.
“Anytime you come into Stockton and get a win against a good team in a tough environment, it’s always good,” Coach Wienen stated. He expressed pride in his team’s effort and their ability to secure the victory.
