On January 7 the Galena Pirates and the Wisconsin Blackhawks Girls Basketball Team faced off in a close match at Blackhawks High School in South Wayne, Wisconsin. The Blackhawks started off strong in the first quarter getting 26 points but the Pirates were close behind with 17. The Pirates fought strategically and defensively but in the end, the Blackhawks took the victory with a close 49-40. The Pirates fought hard but in the end, couldn’t pull ahead. Gracie Furlong ‘25 gave an amazing performance scoring 19 points for the team.
At the end of the first quarter, the Blackhawks were ahead, 26-17. In quarter 2 both teams gave it their all on defense and no points were scored but after half-time, the Pirates and The Blackhawks would both go on to score 23 points during the 3rd quarter. At the start of the 4th quarter, The Blackhawks were ahead by 9 points. The Pirates gave it their all but in the end, couldn’t come out ahead. “I think the game started strong, but we slowly started to lose the lead. I think we fought hard and put up a good fight,” said Leah Heller ‘27.
Furlong 25’ came out with a strong performance scoring 9 points in the first quarter. She put on a good defense in the second quarter and would go on to score 10 points in the 3rd quarter. She fought hard in the 4th quarter.
The Galena Pirates and Wisconsin Blackhawks delivered a hard-fought game. Despite Furlong’s impressive 19-point effort and the Pirates’ resilience, the Blackhawks secured the win. Though the score wasn’t in their favor, the Pirates showed great passion and potential for future games to come.
