The Galena boys’ basketball team fought hard but ultimately came up short in a tough battle against Marquette, 62-72 on January 11. In the tense game, junior Mason Smith gave the Pirates an advantage in the second quarter. The game suffered a defensive struggle, but overall, the team played well against a team that is #1 in class A in Iowa.
In the first quarter, Myles Schumacher ‘25 led the team with 10 points. Schumacher ‘25, made a 3-pointer early in the game and had a big steal right before the end of the 1st quarter. Two 2-pointers from Sam Amaya ‘26 and Owen Hefel ‘26 led to a close quarter, down 14-15. Coach Matt Wienen said, “Our guys did a great job playing positions they’re not quite used to and did a great job playing hard all game.”
In the second quarter, Smith ‘26 contributed significantly to the game. “It was a huge lift to have Mason have such a big impact on the game early,” said Coach Wienen. Smith ‘26 made 12 points in only the second quarter. “It felt good knowing I was helping my team,” said Smith ‘26. He had a good game scoring 14 of his team’s 62 points.
“We gave ourselves a chance to win at the end and as a coach, that’s all you can ask for,” said Coach Wienen proudly. The game ended with a 10 point difference, 62-72. The Pirates’ determination and hard work throughout the season have set the stage for a bright future, leaving fans eager for what’s to come next.
