On Wednesday, January 15 the Galena Pirates played Scales Mound at home for a NUIC conference game. The final score of the game was 46-56; the Hornets took the win. The game was a long brutal game that had everyone on the edge of their seat.
During the first quarter, The Pirates scored 8 points. Six of the eight points were made by Andrew Koenigs ‘26 and the last shot was made by Roman Romer ‘26. For the Scales Mound Hornets number 10, Derrick Distler ‘25 made two three-pointers as well as his teammate number 24, Aidan Soppe ‘26. During the first quarter, The Hornets had one foul on them whilst the Pirates had 0.
In the second quarter, the Hornets kept the lead 16-26. Soppe made a 3-pointer as well as another shot bringing 5 points this quarter. Owen Hefel ‘26 made a 3-pointer with 2 minutes and 34 seconds remaining. As the Pirates worked as hard as they possibly could they just couldn’t catch up to the Hornets.
The third quarter was long, with a score of 30-35. Samuel Amaya ‘26 stole the ball getting it down to the basket then threw it to Romer who got the shot. Amaya had a total of 6 points this quarter as well as Koenigs. “We were struggling to make shots,” said Amaya “but we continued to play hard.”
The fourth quarter was rough. The Pirates scored but the Hornets scored faster and were on fire. Scales Mound player number 12, Kaden Duerr ‘26 made 4 of 4 free throw shots as well as 2 shots. Senior Myles Schumacher made a shot as well as a 3-pointer.
With this loss, the Pirates overall record is 12-8 while the Scales Mound Hornets is 7-9. “We played well but the Hornets were shooting way better than expected,” said Mason Smith ‘26.
