After 21 years as head coach and one year as co-head coach, Ed Freed is stepping down from his role with the Galena High School football program. Known for his commitment to improving the team, Freed leaves behind a legacy that will be felt for generations to come.
Freed’s passion for football began in high school and continued at Northwest Missouri State University, where he played football, basketball, track, and baseball. However, football was the sport that offered him the greatest opportunities. Freed played quarterback for two years and strong safety for his last two years in college. His coaching career began in Missouri, where he coached for two schools, spending three years at each. He also coached football and track for three years at the University of Dubuque. Freed then moved to Galena, where his long-lasting legacy took shape.
Freed initially coached football and track at Galena High School. In 2008, he fully committed to coaching football. In 2003, he served as co-head coach alongside Coaches Korte and Hyland. After Coach Korte retired, Freed took over the role of head coach.
“Some of the most memorable moments in my career were being part of two state championships—2003 vs. LeRoy and 2007 vs. Tuscola—and a semi-final in 2014, where we lost in the final 19 seconds,” said Freed. While there were some losses along the way, Freed always maintained a positive outlook. “It is the relationships that I will truly cherish with my staff, players, and families throughout the years,” Freed added.
Balancing the roles of athletic director, P.E. teacher, head football coach, and a dad was no easy task. “I am someone who wants to be the best at everything I do, and it’s not always easy to allocate the time needed to excel in all areas,” said Freed. Moving forward, he plans to focus on his role as athletic director, prioritize family, and watch his daughter play volleyball.
Freed’s journey to success required years of hard work and dedication. “You’ve got to love what you do if you want to be good at it,” said Freed. He encourages new coaches and others entering the field to believe in what they do. He reflects on how respect, leadership, and sportsmanship are key roles, but he believes the most important thing is to have fun. “It can be stressful at times, even for the kids. But, as I always say, the harder you work, the more fun you can have,” said Freed.
Freed’s Pirate pride shines through as he says, “I look forward to continuing to do anything I can to help the football program in the future and will always be the #1 fan moving forward.” Galena High School will forever be proud and thankful to have had such a dedicated and caring head coach.
