On January 22, Galena Girl’s Basketball went head to head against River Ridge in an intense and exciting game. Coach Jamie Watson said, “We were able to get a great start and really took control of the game early on.” Even at the start of the game, Gracie Furlong ‘25 was controlling the offense and making plays that were necessary in order to secure that win.
Before the game, coach Watson’s strategy was to have the starters box out and rebound, leaving the Pirates with 35-21 in rebounds. In the first quarter, the Pirates had a fast paced game which allowed them to have an amazing start. The ball control from Furlong ‘25 and Megan Koenigs ‘28 gave the team an outstanding lead.
In the third quarter, the game was 36-21, setting the Pirates at a good spot. Coach Watson said, “We made everything difficult for Stockton and were able to control the boards, limiting their second chance.” Koenigs ‘28 was a notable player during this game. Throughout the third quarter, she did an excellent job at rebounding and being physical. Koenigs ‘28 said, “
Finally, the game ended, giving the Pirates an amazing conference win. Coach Watson said, “It was a big conference win against a really good team.” In the past, Stockton has always been a tough team, so this win really brought the team together. However, it didn’t mean that there weren’t some difficult times for Galena. Leah Heller ‘27 said, “I was nervous before the game, but I tried not to think and just play my best.”
Overall, this game was really good for the Pirates as they look to clinch their fourth consecutive conference championship. Coach Watson said, “Hopefully this momentum can continue to carry us through the rest of the conference schedule.” The Pirates did amazing and their strong dedication is clear.
