On Tuesday, January 29th, Galena was pitted against Stockton in a home game. Despite the game constantly staying neck to neck, the game was ultimately settled in overtime, with the Pirates scoring another eight points ahead.
The top scorers for the game included Gracie Furlong ‘25, with 26 points. Behind her was Leah Heller ‘27, with 11 points scored, and Ell Law ‘27, with 5 points. A major allotment of their score came from 17 successful free throws! The game was a true testament to the team’s skill and overall vigor. Because of this victory, the Pirate’s W/L ratio is now 15-9.
In the first quarter, The game started out close. Both teams kept with one another up until the final few minutes of the game. Heller contributed 5 points to the team’s score, with one basket and one three-pointer. Furlong racked up 2 free-throws and 3 baskets. The first quarter ended with the score 10-6, and while the Pirates were ahead, the game had only begun.
The second quarter increased the tension between the two teams, as Galena scored ten points, and Stockton 14, leaving the game tied by halftime. Both teams zipped up and down the quarter with great haste throughout the entirety of the quarter. Two players in particular, Furlong of Galena, and Mammosen of Stockton, acted as the leading scorers for both of their respective teams. By the end of the quarter, Furlong shot 2 successful free-throws and three baskets. “I think we did pretty good!” Exclaimed Kendra Bauer ‘27. “I could have done a little more, but overall we performed well.”
The third quarter began with a brief and bitter contention, with the score constantly balancing out. Furlong made quite a couple of layups, scoring 4 points by piercing Stockton’s defense. Law shot one successful three pointer and two baskets as well, adding 5 points to the board. In retaliation, the Stockton team made a few successful baskets, but it wasn’t nearly enough to stop GHS. The quarter ended with Galena ahead by seven points. Galena scored 11 points that quarter, while Stockton scored six. “Typically, by the third quarter you’d have a good guess on how the game will turn out,” said Law. “But for this game, you couldn’t be too sure, because for however much effort we gave them, they gave back.”
In the fourth quarter, Stockton made an unexpected comeback, Scoring 10 points over Galena’s 3. Mammosen successfully sank 2 free-throws and 2 baskets. Another player in Stockton’s roster, Brashaus, also scored 2 successful baskets and 2 free-throws. The only points earned by galena was one basket by Furlong and one free-throw from Heller. With the final score 36-36, the game was put into overtime. However, Galena secured the victory by adding another 11 points to the board, while Stockton only managed to score 5 points. “I think that our defense really helped us, as we were able to force them to have turnovers which turned into easy layups for us,” Said Furlong. Overall, I am very happy that we won that game and I think that that was a really good environment for me and my teammates to play in.”
