Pirate Co-Competitors of the Week
Ava Lange 6/7th Basketball – Coach Lindsey Vincent said, “Ava Lange has been such a force on our 6th/7th grade basketball team. She has averaged 17 points a game and has dominated on defense. Ava is a versatile player and can play under the basket or take charge on the outside. Her aggressiveness and hustle has helped lead the team to a 4-0 record. Ava is very hard working and is always willing to put in the time and effort to become a better player. Her future looks very bright.”
Connor Higgins MS Wrestling – Connor Higgins placed first at the Cuba City Invitational Wrestling Tournament on January 30th and first at the Kevin Powers Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Mount Carroll on Saturday, February 1st. Connor went 7-0 between the two tournaments with three falls, two technical falls (wins by 15 or more points) and a major decision (win by more than 8 points). Coach Gary Webster said, “Connor has a 16-2 record on the season and is clearly one of the hardest workers in the wrestling room and a team leader. He is in constant motion on the mat making him a difficult opponent. His sights are set on getting to the IESA state championships this year.”
Other Nominations
Cora McCoy JV Basketball – Coach Joe Engle said, “Cora came off the bench this past week with a season high 16 points, 2 steals and a couple of rebounds and helped lead us to victory at West Carroll. Cora is improving in her skills weekly and works hard in practice and in games. She always gives a spark to the team when she is called upon!”
Justin Lin Scholastic Bowl – Justin helped the Pirate Scholastic Bowl team secure sixth place at the Winnebago Invitational tournament on Saturday with his team-high 23 toss-ups out of 160 questions heard. In one game alone, he correctly answered one third of all the tossup questions asked during that round. Earlier in the week, he had another high score for the varsity with 6 correct answers in two matchups versus West Carroll. Justin currently leads the team in tossups answered correctly with 87. Coach Ron Jenkins said, “Justin’s love and knowledge of classical music have been extremely beneficial to this year’s team. If the question is about Chopin you know that Justin will know the answer!”
Brady Turner Scholastic Bowl – Brady contributed to the Galena Scholastic Bowl B team’s 10th place finish at the Winnebago Tournament on Saturday. He captained the team for much of the time and he led the B team in scoring with 18 correct tossups, bringing his season total to 26. According to Coach Ron Jenkins, “Brady has come a long way in this, his first season of scholastic bowl competition. My only regret is that he waited until this year to give it a try. He’s doing a great job as a senior rookie! Brady’s specialities on the team are science, math, and history.”
