On February 4, the Galena Girls Basketball team went up against Winnebago in a fast-paced and dramatic game. Coach Jamie Watson said, “We had a pretty good start, our ball control was going well and we had strong plays.” During the first few minutes of the game, the Pirates were already doing amazing, but unfortunately left the first quarter with a 9-12 score.
Throughout the first half, Galena struggled a bit to catch up and was a little bit behind. Coach Watson said, “We weren’t playing our best, but still battled and had a chance at the end.” Winnebago had a strong defense and played quickly, making it difficult for the Pirates to get the points that they needed. Leah Heller ‘27 said, “I got a little nervous when the game was getting super physical.”
Finally, the game ended, leaving the Pirates with an unfortunate loss at 36-42. Coach Watson said, “Winnebago has been playing really good basketball recently and took care of business against us.” However, even though Galena suffered a defeat and unfortunately had multiple players sick, they still hold their heads high and are excited for what their season will bring them. Their next game is on February 11 at East Dubuque, make sure to come out and support your Galena Pirates!
