The Galena girls’ basketball team gave it their all but ultimately faced a tough defeat against Rockford Lutheran on February 3, losing 31-59. In this challenging game, sophomore Ell Law ’27 helped the Pirates out by scoring 13 of the team’s 31 points, most of them in the first half. Sophomore Leah Heller ’27 also played a key role on the offensive side. The Pirates came into the game shorthanded with several players sick, including Gracie Furlong ’25. Coach Jamie Watson said, “Lutheran is one of the best teams in the area, and they showed it that night.”
In the first quarter of the game, Law ’27 got the Pirates off to a strong start with two 3-pointers. Freshman Megan Koenigs ’28 also helped out by scoring a 2-pointer, ending the quarter short, 8-11. Coach Watson said, “I thought the kids battled and played hard.”
At the end of the first half, the Pirates were down 16-27. Points were made by Law ‘27, Koenigs ’28, Heller ’27, and Kendra Bauer ’27. Coach Watson added, “Heller played a big role in running the offense and handling the basketball. I thought she did an excellent job.” Heller ’27 said, “It was a stressful game, but we gave it our best.”
At last, the game ended with a 28-point difference. Although the outcome was not what the Pirates had hoped for, they learned from the experience and will continue to improve as they head into the postseason.
