Coming into another semester of the ‘24 -’25 school year, means yet again another recipient of the Galena Rotary Student of the Quarter award. Sara Perez-Carrillo ‘27 received this award, accompanied by high praise from her teachers. This award highlights sophomores who have excelled in their efforts to improve academically and are not always recognized for these efforts. One is chosen for this award based on teacher nominations who have noticed a student’s exemplary effort, performance, and overall character.
GHS teachers had nothing but positive things to comment about Perez-Carrillo and her demeanor in the classroom. Mrs. Schulz, who works very closely with Perez-Carrillo on a day-to-day basis, appreciates her willingness to learn and the attitude she brings into the classroom. “Sara is one of my hardest working students, which shows in her academic performance,” Mrs. Schulz added, “She always has a positive attitude and a big smile on her face, which makes my day.”
Even teachers like Mrs. T, Mrs. Bookless and Mrs. Hendricks, who don’t always see Perez-Carrillo, can still all agree that she is one of the most kind and respectful students at GHS. Her family-based values really shine through in Perez-Carrillo’s interactions with others and reaffirm the genuineness of her actions. This demonstrates her ability to apply all of her tenacious qualities to each and every classroom. “Sara is a great student. She works really hard in class, and she is one of the sweetest, most respectful students I’ve ever worked with.” Bookless shares, “I love that she got this award, and think that she absolutely deserves it.” Perez-Carrillo mentions that English with Mrs .Bookless is her favorite class at GHS and that she appreciates all she learns.
Perez-Carrillo truly embodies the spirit of the Galena Rotary Student of the Quarter Award through her kindness, respect, and tireless work ethic. In her free time, she enjoys researching all things about the military and after high school, she would like to join the Army. The school guidance counselor, Mrs.Deppe, also had a lot to add and comment about when it came to the actions of Perez-Carrillo. “Her contributions to our school and community are invaluable, and I wholeheartedly support her nomination for this prestigious honor. Sara not only inspires her peers but also leaves a lasting impact on everyone she encounters,” Deppe says.
We are honored to have another GHS student be a recipient of the Galena Rotary Student of the Quarter award. Praise and recognition all go to Perez-Carrillo and the Pirate nation is endlessly proud!
