The Galena Pirates Girls Basketball team traveled to the home court River Ridge/ Scales Mound to compete on Friday, February 7. The final score was 57-53. Gracie Furlong has started every game when asked why she started the game. Number four, Gracie Furlong said, “It’s not always the captain that does the tipoff, it’s the person that normally jumps the highest.” There is no uncertainty that Gracie can’t jump high with her vertical being 9-foot 6 inches. She is a great asset to the team.
At halftime, the Pirates were down by 25-26. By the third quarter, the Pirates were up by 43-36. In the last quarter, the Pirates won the RR/SM home turf game by 57-53. Freshman Megan Koenigs has been dominating on the court, scoring herself a Pirate Competitor of the Week for the first time in the basketball season. Koenigs said, “I was happy with my performance at the game and even more happy about winning Pirate Competitor of the Week.”
“After losing against Winnebago on February 4, fortunately, we were able to turn the page and get a big win at RR/SM,” said Jamie Watson “We have a tough week ahead with East Dubuque and Stockton on the schedule to finish up the regular season.” Hopefull, the girls will keep the momentum as they approach the regional games. Come out and support the girls’ basketball team in their next game Warren on February 10.
