February 7 Galena traveled to Fulton to take on the Steamers. Once there the JV team played first, winning 57-32. Then varsity took the court and dug deep for the strength to win 44-42 in overtime. The night’s top scorer Myles Schumacher ‘25 had a total of 13 points and Roman Romer ‘26 followed with 10 points. These two players had over half of the points overall.
The first quarter started off strong, the teams were going back and forth. During this time Owen Hefel ‘26 made a 3 and Romer made 2 shots being the top scorers. “I think the game went very well, Myles had a great game leading us in overtime and hitting some big shots,” said Romer. “As a team, we can always improve in our scoring but our defense is really why we win games this year holding teams to minimal points. While we run the floor and get easy buckets.”
During the second quarter, the score was 17- 20, Pirates were down by 3. The top scorer of the quarter, Sam Amaya ‘26 scored 6 points including 2 free throws. The game was close, really close, but if the boys lost any momentum they would fall behind.
Third quarter Schumacher and Romer brought the score up by 7! Schumacher made two shots and a free throw shot, Romer on the other hand had made 2 free throws to score 24-31. “I think if we focus on making the shots we would make more,” said Schumacher.
The fourth quarter was very intense back and forth. One team got the ball and the other stole it. Mason Smith ‘26 scored a 3-pointer and Romer scored 4 more points. With less than 20 seconds on the clock, the Pirates had the ball and tried the score, 36-36, but no one wanted to chance losing the ball to the other team. The game then moved into overtime.
To start overtime, the teams faced off in another tip-off. Fulton got the ball. Throughout the period Schumacher made 2 3-pointers and Amaya made 2 free throws, number 10, on the other team, made two shots, and number 5 made one but the Pirates were still up by 2 points. After a time-out by the other team, the Steamers threw the ball in but Schumacher stole it from one of Fulton’s players, locking in the win.
In the end, the Pirates won 44-42 in overtime, the teams stayed close to score the whole game. “I think we should have scored a lot more than we did,” said Smith, “But it was very exciting and fun to go into overtime and win”. With this win, it makes the overall rank 16-11.
