Seniors Braden Kevern and Myles Schumacher play their last regular season game against West Carroll. Pirates defeated the Thunders with a final score of 72-32.
On February 18, the Galena Boys’ Basketball team played against West Carroll. Before the game started, two players; Braden Kevern ‘25 and Myles Schumacher ‘25 were honored for senior night. They were recognized with flowers for their mothers and for their accomplishments during the past 4 years at GHS.“It was our last regular season game in the gym. It made the senior night even more special because Myles and I are cousins,” said Kevern ‘25
As the game started both teams came out with high energy in anticipation of winning. The Pirates started strong, gaining a lead of ten in the first quarter. Mason Smith ‘26 hit a three and drained all four free throws. Smith showcased his skills by scoring 7 points and was the leading scorer in the quarter. ”It felt good putting up so many points with limited time on the clock,” he said.
Leading into the second quarter the Pirates kept the Thunder to four points. Roman Romer ‘26 helped the Pirates score eight points, putting them in a 31-point lead. “I feel like we took care of business against West Carroll. It felt good to score 8 points,” he said.
At the start of the third quarter, the Pirates took control of the game, fueled by Kevern’s eight-point run (two three-pointers and a two-pointer). This surge put the Thunder in a deep hole, and the Pirates ultimately widened their lead to 37 points.
In the game’s final stretch, the Thunder had no chance of returning as the Pirates outscored them 72- 32. Getting in the game freshman Jack Vincent scored 6 points in the lane.
This was the last regular season home game, and the last regular season game was played in the GHS gym before construction began in March and the gym was torn down.“It was amazing that I got to finish on the court I started on,” said Schumacher ‘25
