On March 24, the Galena Pirates softball team kicked off the 24-25 season with a win against Polo High School 9-1. Freshman Makenna Berning and Senior Ava Hahn both tied up with four at-bats. The Galena Pirates had 29 at-bats while Polo had 25. There were multiple players from Polo that all had 3 at-bats. Polo had no RBIs, while the Galena Pirates had 2 players that had RBIs.
Galena Pirates softball player Makenna Berning ‘28 had an outstanding performance during the first game of the season. Berning had 4 at-bats, 2 home runs, 2 RBIs, and only 1 strikeout. Berning said, “I was shocked but was also thankful that the pitcher gave me the perfect pitch to hit!”
Galena pitcher Ava Hahn ‘25 pitched all 7 innings of the game, while Cheyenna Wilkins ‘25 only pitched 6 out of the 7 innings. Polo pitcher Wilkins had 8 earned runs, while Galena pitcher Hahn had no earned runs. During the first, second, and third innings, Galena Pirates were in the lead.
During the game, Galena pitcher Hahn had 19 strikeouts, while on the other hand, Polo pitcher Cheyenna Wilkins only had 8 strikeouts. Hahn had an amazing first game for pitching to kick off her career.
In conclusion, it was a very exciting game and a great way to kick off the 24-25 season with a win! Hahn said, “It was a great first game, and we did what we had to do to pull off a great first win!”
