On April 3, the GED soccer team faced a historically tough opponent, River Valley, resulting in a 0-2 score. The team started off on a strong note, with the team’s defense making sure to kick every ball out or up the line. Mya McCoy ‘26 said, “It was really tough with their forwards, but we managed to make it work and stop those balls from getting scored.”
However, the team suffered with River Valley scoring a goal on them in the first 40 minutes. Molly Beadle ‘25 said, “We were doing what we could, but they just had a really good offense who could shoot.” The team didn’t let that hold them back, though. They stayed on top of their game and gave 110%, making some close calls on River Valley. Ava Engle ‘27 said, “Our main strategy was to keep up on defense and to push their offense back.”
During half time, the team received some feedback from the coaches and a break before they got back in the game. Coach Spencer Pyle said, “I knew what we were capable of out there and I wanted these girls to know it, too.” The coaches made sure to tell the players what they were doing well with and how to do better, providing good insight on how to make better plays.
Emma Duncan ‘26 said, “I really tried to get the ball up onto their field in the second half. Our strategy was to work on passing up the line.” Even with this strategy and their amazing defense, Galena was scored on again. Mya McCoy ‘26 said, “We tried to make that comeback attempt, but it was really difficult. Our main option and goal was to do well on defense, making sure they couldn’t get past us.”
Finally, the game ended with a 0-2 score, River Valley winning in the end. Coach Pyle said, “I didn’t see this loss as a bad thing, but instead as something we can learn from.” Even with the loss, the girls seemed to hold their heads up high as shown by the girls who spoke positively. Assistant coach Luis Vazquez said, “Our defense was amazing all night and I can’t want to see it develop over the season.” The Galena Girls Soccer team will have their next game on 4/7 against Dodgeville, come support your Galena Pirates!
