As the school year ends and summer is just around the corner, a big question amongst GHS seniors is whether they will be exempt from their finals. For some students, this is a chance for a break. For others, not much changes.
So, what exactly does it take for a senior to be exempt from finals? The policy outlines specific criteria. In the first semester, seniors may be exempt from their finals if they have an SAT score on file and maintain an A or B average in the class. During the second semester, seniors must have no behavior referrals, no more than nine absences for the entire year, and still carry an A or B in the class. While this policy isn’t new, the exact origin is unknown. “I have no idea how long it has been going on,” said Mrs. Hawkins. “It was before I was here, so at least four years, but I would guess much longer.”
Some might be wondering why this privilege is only given to seniors. “We’ve discussed the idea of letting underclassmen be exempt too,” Mrs Hawkins shared. “But there are two main reasons we don’t. First, we want to celebrate our seniors and give them a special incentive. Second, finals are a valuable skill-building experience. Whether it’s college, trade school, or a job, big tests are a part of life. It’s important that students get practice taking them during their time at GHS.” While younger students may feel it’s unfair, the exemption policy is just one of the ways GHS encourages seniors to work hard and keep up good attendance.
