On April 12, at Pearl City, the Galena Pirates played in the Pearl City Softball Tournament, placing first overall. The Galena Pirates beat the Pearl City Wolves in a thrilling 4-3. Despite falling behind early, the Pirates showed grit and determination to win the second game.
Pitcher Ava Hahn ‘25 had an amazing game: 3 runs, 2 walks, 1 home run, and an incredible 13 strikeouts. Hahn’s consistency was key to Galena’s comeback, “I definitely didn’t start out the best but go through it,” Hahn stated, “it was a great win and we figured out the stuff that went wrong and we adjusted it”.
On the offence, the Pirates began hitting well. Galena plated two runs in the bottom of the first to swing the momentum back in their favor. They tied the game in the fourth, making it 3-3.
In the fifth inning, the game was won thanks to Brooke Dittmar ‘25, and Addison Zmich ‘25 got the scoring run. “Scoring off of Brookes’ hit was very exciting, knowing we won the game, and if that ball hadn’t gone over the fence, we could’ve gotten another point,” said Zmich.
“Every year that we have competed in the Pearl City tournament we have gotten 2nd place so I really wanted to win it my senior year,” said Dittmar, “When the game was tied and Addy was on second with two outs it was a lot of pressure and I knew I had to drive the run in to win the game.”The Pirates worked long and hard to secure a win.
The Pirates’ next games will be April 17 at home against Fulton, April 21 at Dakota, and April 22 at home against West Carroll.
