Galena Varsity Pirates snatched the lead late in their 5-4 victory over Lena-Winslow on Wednesday. The game was tied at four in the top of the tenth when John Heller singled, scoring one run.
Lena-Winslow got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Luke Madigan doubled to center field, and Aiden Wild grounded into a fielder’s choice, each scoring one run.
Drew Koenigs singled, which helped Galena Varsity Pirates tie the game at two in the top of the third.
Galena Varsity Pirates took the lead in the top of the fifth. Gus Nack grounded out, scoring one run, to give Galena Varsity Pirates the advantage, 3-2.
Galena Varsity Pirates committed an error, which helped Lena-Winslow tie the game at three in the bottom of the fifth.
A solo home run to left field by John Heller gave Galena Varsity Pirates the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth.

The pitcher allowed two hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking four. #2 took the loss for Lena-Winslow. The reliever went three and one-third innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits, striking out five and walking one. Drew Koenigs started the game for Galena Varsity Pirates. The right-handed pitcher surrendered six hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out eight and walking three.
Luke Madigan stepped on the bump first for Lena-Winslow. The starter allowed four hits and four runs (two earned) over six and two-thirds innings, striking out 11 and walking three.
Eli Studtmann and John Heller were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Galena Varsity Pirates. John Heller drove the middle of the lineup, leading Galena Varsity Pirates with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-5 on the day. Owen Hefel and Eli Studtmann each stole multiple bases for Galena Varsity Pirates. Galena Varsity Pirates stole five bases in the game.
