On April 10-12, 2025, the Galena Drama department performed their spring play, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), at Turner Hall. The audience was filled with laughter as the cast put on hilarious twists of dramas ranging from the famous Romeo and Juliet to the infamous Scottish play, Macbeth.
The play was exceptionally well received. The cast, which was three people, put on 37 plays in 95 minutes. Actors participated in various quick changes, even some happening on stage with a prop box.
To begin, the actors introduced themselves–portraying characters like them but not entirely. They described their forever love for Shakespeare while pairing wit and charm in their words. The audience was transformed into the world of Romeo and Juliet.
When speaking to the cast, there were mixed feelings about it. Cael Ozee ‘25 commented, “This play was one of the easier plays to prepare for–it honestly had nothing to do with lines, especially like leeway.” Junior Liliana Asta disagreed, however, when asked, she stated, “Being in the Complete Works was unlike anything I had done before. It allowed me to develop so many aspects of my acting skills. I learned so many new skills, like how to manage many props and quick changes. It was so fun and a unique experience that I will never forget.”
The set was simple, it consisted of Tuscan-like walls with fake leaves hanging, and two doors for actors to enter and exit from. The set was kept minimalistic to keep the audience’s attention on the actors instead of on a complex background. The actors ended the second act with Hamlet, including doing Hamlet in the fastest time possible and even backwards. They even incorporated audience participation–having them stand in for the cast.
Overall, there has never been a more goofy show than that of the GHS Drama Club trio.
