On Apr 23, 2025 the main hallway of Galena High School, filled with the sizzling scent of bread and melty cheese. Students in the second and third period Foods class faced a head-on grilled cheese battle. The creative and tasty event saw many teams in it to win bragging rights and a beautiful grilled cheese trophy. Four teams in each period competed not only to make the best sandwich but also to tell an elaborate story and to have unique plating.
Many teams presented their imaginative creations, such as a grilled cheese based solely on a peacock looking for a snack. Others choose to incorporate members of their group into the retelling of their grilled cheese fantasies. The cook-off stemmed from a lesson learned about presentation to add to gourmet food. As well as flavor combinations and catering towards specific groups of people. “ We choose to do a beautiful setting and story, just like how beautiful the grilled cheese flavors were when eaten.” Said Vanessa Vasquez ‘27
In the Second Period A-day class, the team of Colton Richardson ‘26, Averi Reiger ‘26, and Leah Heller ‘27 took home the trophy with their vibrant and imaginative “Percy Peacock” inspired grilled cheese. Their sandwich was a colorful pairing of tomato and melty cheese. They completed the whole presentation by plating it to resemble a peacock. Judges praised the team for their beautiful presentation and delicious grilled cheese.
“This grilled cheese was not only made with a great flavor profile. The visual presentation of the intricately hand-crafted peacock garnish showcased this kitchen’s high skill level like no other.” Said one of the judges, Mrs Calfee
Meanwhile, in the third-period class, another group took over the stage with their creation. They highlighted a gourmet Gouda and grilled onion grilled cheese. They used vegetables and fruits to create a blooming rose garden and highlight the beauty of their creation. The judges were highly impressed by their warm and comforting sandwich and beautiful plating.
The cook-off, judged by local teachers and Galena High School staff, brought laughs, full stomachs, and strong competition. One thing was clear in the end: a delicious meal of Grilled cheese can bring a group together.
