The Galena High School girls’ volleyball team is back on the court, returning after a big state championship, ready to make the most of a brand-new season. With returning upperclassmen and younger players stepping into bigger roles, the team is focused on working hard, competing strongly, and building on the traditions that make Galena Volleyball special.
Practices started up before the school year began, giving the girls a chance to prepare both physically and mentally for the challenges ahead. This year’s roster is made up of a mix of seniors, juniors, and underclassmen, all bringing their own strengths to the team. The older players are leading by example, while the younger athletes are gaining valuable experience that will carry them into the future. Varsity Head Coach Dennis Wills stated, “Anytime you put this young team on the court for a varsity contest, it is very important to have some upperclassmen to serve as team leaders. In volleyball, we usually look to our seniors for that leadership.”
The team’s schedule is packed with conference games, tournaments, and tough matchups against rival schools. Every game is a chance to improve, and the players are determined to push themselves each time they step on the court. “So far, I am so proud of all of my teammates and the bond we instantly created. I truly believe we can go far and make it to the state,” said Captain Mya McCoy ‘26.
One of the highlights of the season will be Senior Night, October 9, a tradition that gives the team the chance to celebrate its graduating players. For many of the seniors, volleyball has been a huge part of their high school experience, and this season represents both an ending and a chance to leave their mark on the program. Jayme Frank ‘26 said, “Volleyball has been a big part of my life, and it means a lot that I get to spend time playing my favorite sport with my favorite people.”
The girls also know that their biggest strengths come from their bond with each other. From long practices to bus rides to games, the team has built a sense of trust and connection that shows up in their play. Every dig, set, and spike depends on teamwork, and the Galena players know how much they rely on one another to succeed. “Having chemistry on and off the court is what helps us be successful in matches,” said senior Violet Doyle. Junior Libero Zoe Blaum said, “The team has great chemistry on and off the court, and we are all best friends, which definitely makes this season great!”
As the season unfolds, the Galena High School girls’ volleyball team is focused on giving their best effort and making memories along the way. Whether it’s celebrating a hard-fought win, pushing through a tough loss, or enjoying time together off the court, this group is proud to represent their school and their community. “The first thing about goals is that they must be attainable. Our team this year has set a goal to reach 30 wins. I think that is a fantastic goal! To reach that goal, we will need to be focused, fired up, and ready to play every time we take the court,” said Coach Wills.
With energy, determination, and team spirit, the Pirates are ready to face whatever the season brings, one serve at a time.
