JV matters
As the 2015-2016 JV boys basketball season comes to a successful close, the Pirates are happy with their progress and development. The boys finished the season 11-7 with a few close losses towards the end that could have gone either way. In reality though, JV is meant to prepare our younger students at GHS for quality varsity years.
“I’m really pumped to play varsity,” said sophomore center Barrett Bell, “and I feel like playing on the JV team has really helped prepare me to be successful.”
Credit also needs to be paid to JV coach, Nate Bingham, for helping the guys get better and better everyday in practice. He pushes them to be the best that they can be, and also helping make clutch decisions down the stretch in tight games.
“I really like Nate as a coach,” said freshman guard Evan Kruse, “He is very outgoing and easy to talk to in games and practices.”
A turning point in the JV season was when the Pirates beat Potosi by one. A Galena turnover turned into a Potosi turnover, which lead to a wide open lay-up for freshman Connor Einsweiler. The boys shot lights out that game, and was a really impressive performance against a very good Potosi team.
“Our team has taken strides from the beginning of the season.” said Bell, “our weaknesses from the beginning of the season turned into our strengths by the end of the season.”
Next year looks bright for the future Pirates, with a lot of freshman players this year who have the potential to be impact players and leaders next year.
“We are excited to bring in a fresh new group of kids onto the JV team next year, along with the great freshmen that came onto the team this year.” said JV head coach Nate Bingham.
“I’m excited to see what next year brings for our team,” said Kruse, “the most exciting part about next year though is going to be able to lead the team as a sophomore.
