Galena girls’ basketball gets a new look
Have you noticed the Galena Girls’ Basketball team walking around in the hallways lately? Well if you haven’t noticed how sharp they look then you probably haven’t been to school in a while. Mrs. Murphy commented on the players’ new gear, “You call those sweat suits? More like sweet suits.”
All of this brand new Nike attire is not coming from just anywhere, it has taken a lot of hard fundraising and dedication of the coaching staff to be out and searching for all the new and good deals. The girls basketball team, just this year alone, got new home and away jerseys, shooting shirts, travel gear, socks and backpacks.
“Our new Nike stuff is sick,” said junior Sydney Schuler, “When we walk into a school with all of our new stuff on, you can tell the other team gets nervous.”
Over the course of the last few years, the team has participated in many fundraisers. Such as the Finnin Ford test drive fundraiser, selling clothing from Fancloth, and doing the concession stand at home volleyball games. Of course, those fundraisers were probably enough to pay for the entirety of the gear. But that was not the case.
“The district helped us a lot in paying for the new uniforms and shooting shirts,” said Varsity head coach Jamie Watson’s wife Lisa, “But the basketball program payed for the socks, travel pants, travel jackets and bags straight out of pocket.”
Overall, the new gear has gone over pretty well within the varsity team and the whole program. Because the varsity team got all new attire, the JV team got all of the Varsity’s old jerseys, bags and travel gear along with the team socks.
“Our JV uniforms last year were atrocious,” said sophomore Morgan Wills, “I’m glad that we actually have some nice stuff to wear this year.”
