After losing familiar faces, such as Katie Furlong, there was a lot of doubt about how the 2017-2018 season would go.
Some remarks from the community included comments like, “You won’t win eight games, you’ll be lucky to be .500,” and “lower half of the conference standings, right?”
With all this doubt, the girls have managed to make it into a positive. The Galena Girls Basketball team used this to fuel their energy and motivation going into the season.
The team opened their season with the Warren Turkey Tournament. Having swept Orangeville, Warren and Durand, the team found its first competition with East Dubuque.
“East Dubuque was our first real competition we have seen and it’s still early in the year,” said senior Sydney Schuler, “When we play them later on in the season, we’ll have more experience.”
Overall, the team ended up getting second in the tournament. In the first conference game against Eastland, the team had trouble stopping them, but got back on track with a win over Le-win and Orangeville.
With back to back games, the Pirates were defeated in two close games against Stockton and Shullsburg. Using those losses as motivation, the pirates got back on track with a win over Pearl City.
With a winning record, the team continues to work hard and to improve.
With the postseason quickly approaching the team needs to stay focused.
“To do well in the postseason we need to stay focused in practice and work hard at everything we do,” said Schuler, “We need to keep pushing ourselves to be successful in the postseason.”
